Silver City, NM -- WNMU softball got its first look of the season at its home turf in game conditions as intra-state rival Eastern New Mexico came to town Monday for a double header. WNMU (2-5, 0-0 HC) took game one 11-9, while the Zias (10-9, 0-0 LSC) won the night cap 8-7.
The Mustangs' Debbie Yescas (SO, SS, Sahurita, AZ) scored five runs on the day with four hits and two RBIs. Meredith Drahota (Jr., CF, Phoenix, AZ) scored four times and recorded five hits including the game winning homer in game one.
In the first game Eastern held an 8-1 lead before the Mustangs racked up a five-run fourth inning and added one in the fifth and two each in the seventh and eighth inning to steal the game away from Eastern in a game that saw 29 hits between the two teams. Freshman Priscilla Garcia (P, Albuquerque, NM) got her first collegiate win on the mound.
Game two saw Eastern get a 2-0 lead after two innings before Western took the lead with a three-run third inning. The game was tied at five after four innings, and at six after five but the Zias scored two in the final inning.
The two teams meet again on Tuesday. Game times are set for noon and 2:00pm.
